Basil Hayden's

National Hot Toddy Day is fast-approaching (it’s January 11th), but are you prepared? I think it might be time. The weather outside is frightful, but the hot toddy is so delightful and if you have a glass then oh, let it pour, let it pour, let it pour. I just made that up.

Anywho, with the weather (finally) feeling like winter, the Hot Toddy is an ideal cocktail choice to warm things up. The classic Hot Toddy is fantastically unique given that it offers a welcoming warmth, along with spices and flavors associated with the coldest times of the year – think freshly grated cinnamon, cloves, lemon and orange zest. There’s nothing quite like it. It’s like snuggling up with your favorite hot tea by the fireplace with your lady friend, but better, because of this….

Basil Hayden's Bottle

While Hot Toddy recipes can feature a variety of spirits, perhaps nothing is better than spicy bourbon to bring a Hot Toddy to the next level. The two are made for each other. One of my favorite bourbons, Basil Hayden’s, has a terrific twist on the classic Hot Toddy recipe that I wanted to share. This recipe, created by Luca Zanirato  of Miami, FL, features the trademark spice of Basil Hayden’s bourbon, along with the sweetness of honey and distinct flavor of star anise. Check it out here:

  • 2 parts Basil Hayden’s® Bourbon
  • ¼ part Honey
  • 1-2 Star Anise
  • 2 parts Hot Water
  • Orange Zest
  • Lemon Zest
  • 3 Cinnamon Sticks

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake and strain into a hot toddy glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Simple, delicious, warm, inviting and perfect for tackling a cold night and a long winter.
