You have a lot on your mind. Wife, kids, work, bills, the Mets, your pants not fitting correctly anymore. You know, things like that. You try running, yoga, and drinking heavily (just kidding, don’t do that). You try working a little bit later or maybe rock climbing. Maybe you decide you want to moonlight as an Uber driver. Really, these are all great ideas and quality choices. However, sometimes you simply just need to get away for a bit. You need to see new places and experience new things. You need to eat your face off and clear your mind. You need to have a MANcation, playa.
What is a mancation you say? Well, silly, it’s pretty much what you think it is. It’s a man vacation, man. Use your mind and think about it. Man and vacation. That means no women, no kids, and no work. It means a little bit of freedom and a little time to leave all your worries away, even if only for a couple of days. Believe me, it works and it’s awesome. I’m not sure, but God may have created this on the 8th day. You can only rest for so long, amiright?
I recently had to pleasure of mancationing in a spot that I’ve never been in a state that I love. I dipped my toes into the sand of San Antonio, Texas. Oh yes, San Antonio. It’s an awesome city in an awesome state. You may know a little bit about the Alamo or the always impressive San Antonio Spurs, but that’s far from all you can experience in San Antonio.
The first thing that struck me was the very unique mix of Texan and Mexican vibe in the city. It starts right at the airport, which is right near the city and vert easy to use and navigate. This “Texican” feel really made you feel like you were leaving your current world behind and ready for a new adventure. I was on my way, baby. Nothing could stop me now.
Leaving the airport, I headed right for my hotel, the absolutely fantastic JW Marriott Hill Country Resort & Spa. This place is serious. This place is legit. This place is what you think of when you imagine a “ree-dick” (been hanging with my 10 year old daughter) resort and spa destination. From the main gates to your room you are immersed in Texas-luxury-awesomeness. The style and feel is sleek, modern, yet homey and relaxing, calling on all that is Texas. You know where you are, and you are loving it all. You are mancationing like a mother.
After settling in with a dope tour of the resort and the TPC – San Antonio (PGA Tour Experience) golf course, I met the guys and sat down for a great dinner at sports bar High Velocity. It was really good, upscale, fun bar food. The atmosphere was very cool, with literally massive TVs showing just about any sporting event you could hope to see. The food was delicious and well executed. Good beer list with lots of Texas beers I’ve never heard of (win). You also knew you were in Texas…even when going to the, uh, corral.
After dinner, we all decided that chilling outside in the nice weather by the fireplace was just the right thing to do. Check out the grounds…the pool looks sick and the lounge/hangout area was really looking fresh. These are some day time pics so you can really appreciate it, but the nighttime was just as nice.
After an outstandingly peaceful and care-free night’s sleep, it was time for some serious, local, handmade, fresh and tasty Southwestern fabulous at the hotel’s really great Cibolo Moon. You are in Texas, so you go big or go home. Period. There is no room for anything less than the breakfast buffet. All-you-can-eat, but very high quality grub. Seriously good. I started with some amazing cheddar bacon biscuits, but the condiments and things that most places forget about were the real draw. I mean Jalepeno Cream Cheese (among others), homemade jams, jellies, and peanut butter, salsa up the wazzoo…it was nuts and everything was better, fresher, and more awesome than the next thing. I was a great breakfast from start to coffee. I could have plowed into that breakfast all day long, but we had a agenda to hit.
After I stuffed my face something fantastic, it was off to the really amazing Toyota Texas Manufacturing and Visitors Center. It was great. I dropped a detailed post about it right here…check it out.
Man, this was awesome. I loved it…for reals. It was a great experience. Now…back to the JW for some spa relaxation and whiskey tasting. Good life, good times.
We entered the well manly enough Lantana Spa, a peaceful designed to be equally pleasing for both men and women. The spa was sizable and impressive. The list of services and amenities was ample and more than anyone could enjoy during one trip. You could spend a day just whiling the day away with a massage, maybe a facial, and some lounging around enjoying the peace and tranquility. It’s a great spot that runs both inside and out, with an equally awesome pool space. If you don’t hit this spot in some form or fashion, you are doing yourself a disservice, big time.
So, as I love to do, after all of that peace, quiet, and cleansing…it’s off to a whiskey tasting. You have to mix the ying and the yang, right? The experience was as top notch as the resort itself. Very special, very impressive. I loved every minute of it. I now appreciate the intricacies of whiskey much more. There’s a huge array of drink. We tried some local Texas spirits, some pricey and so not pricey. We munched on things like candied bacon kettle corn and some spicy nut mixes. The food pairing was spot on with the tasting and made the experience that much more bespoke and artisanal. It was really impressive and well done. The cigar was the final, perfecto touch. This was an epic tasting done by a pro that really enjoyed his craft. That makes all the difference and it made the event. If you have the time and the foresight, set this up…you’ll be very happy that you did.
I’m sure you’re wondering…the room was top-notch, too. Here’s a quick peak…nicely appointed, same Texas feel, peaceful, well done. It was a pleasure coming back to the room after our long days of good times. Winding down was easy.
Whew…that was hard work. I’m not sure how I survived this stay. I mean, sick meals, uber tastings, dope spa loving, beautiful rooms, lobby barring, PGA-level golf, and cigar fireplace nights. You just can’t beat it. It truly has it all in one spot. The JW Marriott is the place to be if you want to experience Texas, but it’s also the place to be if you want to just experience a fantastic resort, whether it’s for a Mancation, couples weekend, or family vacation. This is spot that won’t be easy to forget…and definite for future trips. No doubt about it.
I mancationed…and it was good.
