Thirsty Thursday: The Little Coffee Know-It-All Book by Shawn Steiman

The Little Coffe Know It All Book (11)

I love coffee. I love it a little too much. I might have a slight problem. There, I said it. I like coffee for the taste and the experience. It literally has no effect on me. I don’t drink it to wake up. I’m not a zombie in the morning and then magically come to life after chugging it down. I just like it…very much. So do many, many, many, many other people. Maybe for other reasons (hello zombie), but the love it there. As a result, people can’t wait to give coffee-related gifts to people. Gift cards, mugs, bags of beans, fancy drips and grinders, funny t-shirts mocking their unsafe obsession. That’s all fine and dandy, but do you really know coffee? Do you REALLY know coffee? Well, maybe you should, since you pit it in your body multiple times a day, don’t you think?

Forget the shirts, pal, because you know about Shawn Steiman’s new book, The Little Coffee Know-it-All. This is da bomb. It’s the perfect Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduation, happy Tuesday gift for the coffee lover in you or that you know or that works down the hall in the messiest cubicle.

Dude…this is a book from “Doctor Coffee.” What? Awesome, that’s what.

Consider this book the advanced degree in all things java. Readers may think they know the how and why of roasting and brewing, but coffee nerds know nothing yet. This goes even further into everyone’s favorite beverage. With even deeper history, techniques, science, and tasting guides than some of the other guides, coffee lovers of all ages will obsess over this book. The Little Coffee Know-It-All is not for the faint of heart.

What’s the best way to store coffee and why? How do you brew the perfect cup of joe? What’s the premium coffee bean in the world? What’s the roast with the most? What’s the real reason to use a siphon coffee maker? In The Little Coffee Know-It-All, Shawn Steiman, Hawaii’s own “Doctor Coffee,” answers these questions and more in a fun, playful but scientifically rigorous manner. For those serious about coffee, this book is the perfect companion to the journey from coffee drinker to coffee know-it-all.

Bottom line: this is fantastic book. It’s super comprehensive, has some really well done illustrations, and is written is a very approachable way. You will know just about everything there is to know about coffee without feeling too much like an obsessed coffee nerd (not that there’s anything wrong with that). You can go into your local coffeehouse and tell them what’s up, baby. It’s fulfilling. You will be a better person after reading this (ok, maybe that’s a bit too much, maybe). Overall, though, it’s an informative and fun read about a topic that is near and dear to, literally, billions of people in the world. Plus, at 128 pages, you can’t go wrong.  It’s easy, yet delightful. Like a nice cup o’ joe. It’s a home run.

If they call you a know-it-all, well, you’ve got the last laugh – the best coffee in town!
