Being a man who doesn’t like sports can be a pretty strange feeling a lot of the time. It can feel like you’re on the outside of some kind of special club that pretty much everyone else is in. Sports may not exactly be the most important thing in the world, but it’s hard not to take that kind of thing to heart when society seems built around reinforcing that idea. Besides, you could be missing out on some fun and good times with friends, right? Once you get into, you’ll find that sports can be a great way to become active, passions and enthusiastic about a whole new area of your life. So if you’re sick and tired of sitting on the sidelines, here are a few things that you can do to embrace a love of sports.

Practice

One of the most common reasons why a lot of people don’t like sports is because they have never been any good at them. Of course, it’s easy to forget but being good at anything isn’t really something that comes easily to most people. Whether it’s playing darts like professionals do, or being able to school all of your friends on the basketball court, getting good at sports is something that takes time, effort, and, most importantly, practice. Don’t assume that you’re going to automatically great and them and then give up if you don’t become a master right away! You have to work at it, man!

Find something different

Of course, there’s a chance that the reason that you’re not interested in sports is that you simply haven’t found the right one yet. Sure, the more mainstream sports out there have huge followings, but you might find something more engaging in some different sports. I have really started to follow soccer (huge everywhere but the US) and I love playing platform (paddle) tennis, too. Look around and don’t be afraid to experiment and find something you love. Who cares if not everyone you know loves it, too!

Follow the stories

Here’s the reality of why people love and watch sports: it’s not really about the sports at all. The truth is that people are interested in the stories. Now, this can mean the stories of the players: where they came from, what they’ve achieved etc. After all, everyone loves an underdog story. But it can also mean the story of the games themselves. Any sports match is filled with twists and turns, near misses and sudden changes in fortune, heart-stopping victories and heart-breaking losses. The entire range of human emotions is present in any single sporting moment and being able to embrace that is the best way to understand what it is that’s truly so wonderful about sports in the hearts and minds of so many people.

Of course, it’s important to remember that there’s no reason why you have to learn to love sports! The truth is that everyone has their own interests and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you if sports aren’t one of yours. As long as you’re doing things that make you happy and you’re not getting in the way of others doing the same, then there’s no problem!
