Beer Apps Untappd and Next Glass Have Decided To Commit

My buddy turned me on to Untappd, over five years ago when they first launched. Long story short, it’s pretty much the best possible beer based social platform available. You can friend, follow, and all of that, but really it’s all about sharing your thoughts about a beer, a brewery, or both. The ratings, comments, and friend track records really make for a unique and helpful experience. You really get to know about a ton fo great beers you most likely wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. Now, the app has nearly 3,000,000 users worldwide and is growing rapidly.

The app’s founders worked on it part-time, which is amazing, and always seemed to regret that they couldn’t update and develop the app as robustly as they wanted to. After many discussions and exploring many different directions, there will be a merger between Untappd and Next Glass, a fellow alcohol based start up. With Next Glass, you rate drinks you’ve had before and the app analyzes your ratings against each drink’s chemistry to build your taste profile. Then, they recommend new beers and wines you’ll love. It’s pretty awesome and it really “pairs” (get it) well with Untappd. Seems like a match made in heaven.

So, the big question is, what does this mean for Untappd? Untappd will remain an independent entity (albeit a subsidiary of Next Glass), with Tim Mather (CEO) and Greg Avola (CTO) continuing to steer the vision of the product. With the resources provided by Next Glass, they will be able to transition into full time roles within Untappd as well as hire on more staff to speed up our feature development and make the platform even better for the community. This means you will get new updates, cool features, and even more badges, faster. There will be no rebranding, name changing, or abrupt pivots. We will continue just as we have, building a world class social community for beer drinkers – only at a much quicker pace.

Here are some potential answers to some questions you may have. If you have questions not listed below, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter or Facebook.

So, there you go. If you have not had the pleasure to use either one of these apps, it’s time to give it a shot. It’s a great experience and should make your next night out a better one.
